Milky way

Taken on a dark night about 15 miles north of Jackson and away from any artificial lights, it’s been a very long time since I’ve seen so many stars! Through binoculars I could even see 3 of Jupiter’s moons – the first time I’ve seen that! I didn’t have a tripod to hand, so had to take the shot by lying the camera on the ground shooting straight up, using an 18mm lens and a 30 second exposure. I would rather have got the horizon in the shot to provide an element of scale, but even then no photo would be able to convey the magnitude of what could be seen — Jackson Hole, Wyoming (Sep 2011).
